Volunteering with Senior Rights Victoria

Five minutes with Stephen M

As a financial advisor, Stephen’s skillsets have proved to be invaluable in his work as a volunteer for Senior Rights Victoria. Based in Rowville, Victoria, Stephen has volunteered with Senior Rights Victoria since April 2021. Stephen assists with case work involving analysis of financial data, drafting letters for clients and completion requirements for closed files.

For Stephen, volunteering has been a constant in his life.

'Previously, I have provided pro bono services to the Victorian Cancer Council assisting patients and families with the financial implications of serious cancer illnesses,' Stephen told us.

'Volunteering with SRV provided some valuable experiences in seeing how vulnerable senior citizens are affected by elder abuse. It was also satisfying to use my own experience as a financial adviser to assist the SRV lawyers with financial analysis and interpretation.'

“Although this was a required portion of my law degree, it was also personally rewarding and was able to be managed on top of full-time work, full time study and personal/family commitments, thanks to the remote work arrangements.”
